WINDSdays is the day of the week when businesses of all kinds, schools, media partners, government agencies, arts groups and any other organization that interacts with the public in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads talks about clean energy, a green environment and the power of wind. A growing list of residents and supportive companies are developing creative events, partnerships and communications aimed at engaging the general public and making “wind” top of mind in the region.
WINDSdays owes its origin to the Virginia Beach Mayor’s Commission on Offshore Wind and Clean Energy, formed to help educate the community about a 120,000 acre windfarm that Dominion Energy will construct starting 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach starting in 2024. When it is completed in 2026, it will supply enough electricity to power some 660,000 homes in the state. Avangrid Renewables plans a second windfarm off Kitty Hawk, NC. In both cases, the power will come ashore in Virginia Beach and then connect across the city into the nation's electric grid.
WINDSday is at least a five-year long “campaign,” meaning there is ample time for anyone wishing to join the movement. Email WINDSdays director Joel Rubin at joel@windsdays.com with ideas or questions or complete an information form on this site. Opportunity is Knocking at our Shore. Let’s tell the world that Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads appreciate this new industry to our nation and wants to take a leadership role in making it successful, here and all along the east coast.
